This week we are shining a spotlight on Purpose Preparatory Academy Charter School, one of our extraordinary clients located in Nashville, Tennessee. We are proud of their success and excited to share their story.

Purpose Prep is closing the achievement gap in Nashville. Their kindergartners and first-graders are currently performing in the 99th percentile! To put this in perspective, the national average is in the 50th percentile. We stopped by when we were in Nashville this week to congratulate them, and hear more about the work they are doing.

Purpose Prep is an  “academically challenging, disciplined, and joyful school” led by Lagra Newman, who opened the doors in the fall of 2013. She completed the prestigious Building Excellent Schools Fellowship Program that gave her the training and resources to start her charter.

The school started with an inaugural class of kindergartners in 2013 and has grown by a grade level every year, currently serving kindergarten through second grade. Nearly all of the students qualify for free or reduced lunches.

Lagra is interested in reshaping expectations for these students. In fact, students are referred to as “scholars” to motivate and encourage them. In addition to academics, Purpose Prep is dedicated to teaching character and the values the school lives by are: Purpose, Respect, Integrity, Self-Determination, and Excellence.

Purpose Prep started using TALENT in August of last year to create a culture of professional growth and collaboration. They use our video observation platform as part of their coaching process. They are building a small team of internal coaches, and TALENT allows them to increase their efficiency and see inside more classrooms, more often.

We are excited about the work Purpose Prep is doing in Nashville and can’t wait to see them grow. Watch the video here for a look inside the classrooms at Purpose Prep.
